About

Since moving to New York City some years ago, I’ve developed a fascination with public restrooms, because of the sheer number that exist. Have you noticed how dramatically different they all are, how varied the décor is, how they miraculously cram all the necessary equipment into a 2-foot-by-3-foot space, how they sometimes surprise you by not matching the venue at all? Public restrooms and bathrooms have become an obsession for me — maybe it’s because I’m a plumber’s daughter.

I’ve been documenting this plethora of potties since 2011, and I’ve expanded beyond New York City to review restrooms wherever I travel (check out my restroom map to see where I’ve been). My concern isn’t cleanliness, so don’t anticipate recommendations on whether or not you should be wary of the toilet (but do read about my restroom rating system). I also provide insight into the establishments these restrooms call home, and maybe you’ll find a new venue to visit, even if the potty isn’t up to par.

And so, without further a-poo, I present to you: the Porcelain Press.

  1. Hi there Porcelain Press. Thank you for the review of Pilsener Haus. We do their PR. It’s nice to come across a unique blog with its own perspective…not just another food blog. We have a good friend who traded the chef (who was born & raised & went to culinary school in Vienna & who cooked at Cafe des Artistes for many years) several choice cuts of venison from her freezer for a couple of pounds of that sauerkraut. She loved it too and so does my wife Gail (of gailpr).

btw yes it is a schlep from the Path train…$5 for a quick cab ride, though, and at one time they did experiment with a shuttle bus, and that idea’s not dead yet. Thanks again for coming & sharing your singular point of view. (I do like the “Herren” sign over the men’s room myself.)
